The MXR EP103 Echoplex Delay is a compact stompbox that faithfully recreates the warm, organic sound of the legendary Maestro Echoplex EP-3 tape echo unit. Housed in a Phase 90-sized enclosure, it offers the iconic "sweet musical voice" of the original 1970s hardware without the maintenance issues, bulk, or expense of vintage tape machines.

The pedal is designed to deliver the EP-3's characteristic high-end taper and complex modulation. It features a 100% analog dry path with Constant Headroom Technology™ (20 volts of headroom) to ensure a hi-fi signal chain, while the delay line itself is digital to simulate tape mechanics accurately.

The control interface is simple yet versatile, consisting of three main knobs:

Delay: Sets repeat time from 40ms to 750ms.
Sustain: Controls the number of repeats, featuring a non-linear taper that mimics the original unit's behavior.
Volume: Adjusts the output level of the repeats.

A standout feature is the Age mode, activated by pushing the Volume knob. This function allows players to "age" the repeats instantly:

Default Mode: Simulates a factory-fresh tape echo with bright, clear repeats and subtle wow and flutter.
Age Mode: As the knob is turned clockwise, it darkens the tone, increases tape saturation (distortion), and intensifies modulation and tape distress. This provides a wide range of textures from pristine slapback to degraded, lo-fi warble.

While the default setup is stereo-ready and straightforward, the EP103 includes several hidden or optional features for expanded utility:

Extended Delay Time: By connecting an optional M199 MXR Tap Tempo Switch to the tap jack, users can access tap tempo functionality and extend the maximum delay time up to 4 seconds.
Stereo & Wet Modes: Internal DIP switches allow users to activate true stereo input/output (requiring TRS cables) or switch to a 100% wet mode for effects loop integration.
Bypass Options: The pedal offers a choice between true relay bypass or trails bypass, allowing repeats to decay naturally when the effect is disengaged.

It is important to note that the EP103 does not include the EP-3's onboard preamp, which was a significant part of the original unit's tonal character. The EP103 applies the preamp's tonal conditioning only to the delay signal, leaving the dry path untouched.

To replicate the full EP-3 experience, Dunlop recommends running the MXR EP101 Echoplex Preamp before the EP103. This combination applies the preamp's "secret sauce" to the dry signal, completing the vintage tone chain.
