The Peavey Nashville 400 is a legendary solid-state combo amplifier specifically designed for pedal steel guitar, though it is also widely used by electric guitarists seeking ultra-clean tones.  Renowned for its massive headroom and durability, it has been a staple in country and steel guitar communities since the 1990s.

The amplifier features a 210-watt solid-state power output driving a single 15-inch Peavey Black Widow speaker. This high-wattage configuration provides exceptional volume and clarity, making it ideal for live performances in medium to large venues, though often considered too loud for bedroom practice. The control layout includes a 3-band EQ with a distinctive Mid-Shift switch (parametric mid-range control), allowing players to precisely sculpt their tone by sweeping the mid-frequency center point.  Additional features include digital reverb, presence controls, and an effects loop. 

The Nashville 400 is celebrated for its "painfully clean" sound with virtually no compression or sag, a trait highly valued by pedal steel players who need every nuance of their instrument to remain articulate.  While some six-string guitarists find the stock Black Widow speaker harsh for standard electric guitar, others prize it as a perfect pedal platform that takes effects exceptionally well. To optimize the tone, many users recommend adding a buffer pedal before the amp to maintain signal integrity, especially when using volume pedals or long cable runs. 

Due to its popularity, a niche market exists for modifying the Nashville 400, with notable techs like Ken Fox offering circuit mods to warm up the tone or reduce noise in the mid-shift knob. It is often compared to the Peavey Session 400 and Vegas 400; while similar in power, the Nashville is generally voiced specifically for the frequency range of steel guitars.  In recent years, lighter alternatives like the Boss Katana have gained traction for home practice, but the Nashville 400 remains the gold standard for live steel guitar amplification due to its robust build and unmatched clean headroom. 

The weight of the Nashville 400 typically ranges between 56.5 lbs and 60 lbs (approx.  25.6–27.2 kg) when equipped with the stock Peavey Black Widow 15-inch speaker.
