The Roland JX-3P is a vintage analog polyphonic synthesizer released in 1983 and manufactured until 1985.  It is celebrated for its lush, warm Roland analog sound, combining digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs) with true analog filters and VCAs. The "3P" in its name stands for Programmable Preset Polyphonic, highlighting its innovative design for the era.

  • 6-voice polyphony with 2 DCOs per voice, offering richer sound design than the single-oscillator Juno series.

  • Resonant low-pass and high-pass filters, delivering classic Roland analog character.

  • 32 factory presets and 32 user-programmable patches, allowing quick access to iconic 1980s sounds.

  • Built-in 128-step polyphonic sequencer, useful for creating rhythmic patterns and sequences.

  • One of the first Roland synths with MIDI, though implementation is basic (note on/off, pitch bend, program change).

  • Includes Roland’s famed onboard chorus effect, contributing to its lush, shimmering tones.

  • Designed for ease of use with a push-button interface, but lacks real-time knobs for deep sound editing—making the optional PG-200 programmer highly desirable for hands-on control.

The JX-3P has been used by artists such as Vince Clarke (Erasure, Depeche Mode), Stevie Nicks, Orbital, The Future Sound of London, and Thomas Dolby.  Its sound spans warm pads, punchy basses, and classic 1980s string emulations.

Despite being overshadowed by the Juno-106, the JX-3P is now recognized as a hidden gem—offering greater oscillator flexibility and a unique blend of digital control with analog warmth.
