The Deering Goodtime Tenor Banjo is a highly regarded, American-made instrument designed for players of Irish traditional music and Dixieland jazz. Known for its lightweight construction, clear tone, and affordability, it serves as an excellent entry-level instrument that does not compromise on playability. 

17-Fret Tenor (Irish Style)

The 17-fret model is specifically optimized for Irish and Celtic music.  Its shorter scale length facilitates fast single-note runs and reduces fingerboard stretches, making it ideal for the intricate melodies found in Irish trad.

• Tuning: Typically tuned in fifths (C, G, D, A) like a viola, but often re-strung and tuned to G, D, A, E (one octave below the mandolin) for Irish sessions. 

• Design: Usually sold as an openback model to produce a mellower, "plunky" tone characteristic of Irish banjo playing. 

• Dimensions: The shorter neck reduces the overall instrument length to approximately 32 inches. 

Regardless of the specific model, all Goodtime tenor banjos share high-quality construction standards typically found in more expensive instruments:

• Materials: The neck is made from slender, stable rock maple with a satin finish.  The rim is constructed from 3-ply violin-grade maple, a feature critical for producing a rich, full tone with excellent clarity. 

• Hardware: Features include a patented Goodtime tailpiece designed to prevent buzzing, rolled steel tension hoops, and sealed geared tuners for stable tuning. 

• Playability: The instruments are known for their "fast action" and slim neck profiles, making them comfortable for beginners and players transitioning from mandolin or violin.
