The Boss DS-1 Distortion is a compact hard-clipping distortion pedal from BOSS (Roland), introduced in 1978 and still in production with its original circuit unchanged. Alongside the ProCo Rat, it popularized the tight, aggressive "distortion" sound that defines the category, and it remains BOSS's best-selling compact pedal ever.
Key points:
Controls: three knobs — Distortion (gain, from mild boost to heavy), Level (output), and Tone (a bi-directional EQ that raises highs/cuts lows clockwise and vice versa).
Sound & use: hard-edged attack with smooth sustain and a slightly scooped midrange; a staple for rock, punk, grunge, and metal (used by Kurt Cobain, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, and others). At low settings it works as a clean boost.
Power/specs: 9V battery or 9V DC adapter (PSA-120S), ~4 mA draw, rugged metal chassis.
It's often noted as less suited to ultra-high-gain modern metal than dedicated high-gain pedals, but prized for its clarity, dynamics, and versatility.
