The MXR M80 Bass DI+ is a versatile bass pedal that functions as a preamp, direct box (DI), and distortion effect in a single unit.  It is widely regarded as a reliable, compact solution for bassists needing a high-quality tone sculptor for live gigs and studio recording. 

Key Features and Functionality

• Dual-Channel Design: The pedal offers separate Clean and Distortion channels.  The Clean channel features a 3-band EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble) and a Color switch for a preset EQ boost.  The Distortion channel includes Gain, Blend (to mix clean and dirty signals), and Volume controls, along with an adjustable Noise Gate to eliminate hum and hiss. 

• Output Flexibility: It provides an XLR Direct Out for connecting to mixing boards or audio interfaces, a 1/4" Output for amplifiers, and a Parallel 1/4" Output for tuners or splitting signals.  The DI function remains active even when the pedal is bypassed.

• Power Options: The M80 can be powered by a 9V battery, a 9V DC adapter, or Phantom Power supplied through the XLR cable from a mixing console.  It includes a Ground Lift switch to reduce noise. 

• Build and Specs: Manufactured by Jim Dunlop, the pedal is built in the United States with a durable enclosure. It draws 9 milliamps of current and features a buffered bypass with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. 

User Reception

Users frequently praise the M80 for its transparency, punch, and ease of use.  Many consider it an essential piece of kit for its ability to provide a usable, pre-EQ'd DI tone without requiring complex setup. While the distortion is noted as being more modern than retro and not highly dynamic (it does not break up based on playing strength), it is appreciated for its tightness and clarity, especially when blended with the clean signal.
