The Line 6 MM4 Modulation Modeler is a discontinued but highly regarded guitar effects pedal that provides 16 classic modulation effects in a single, programmable stompbox. Launched in 2000, it remains a favorite for guitarists seeking vintage-inspired tones with modern reliability and stereo connectivity.

The MM4 is designed to replace multiple individual pedals by offering a comprehensive suite of modulation types, including chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, vibrato, rotary speaker, and ring modulation. It features a 24-bit stereo signal path and true bypass switching to maintain signal integrity.

A standout feature is its four assignable footswitches, allowing users to save and instantly recall up to four custom presets. The interface relies on physical knobs (Effect Selector, Speed, Depth, Tweak, Tweez, Mix) rather than menu diving, facilitating quick adjustments during performance. It also supports an optional EX-1 expression pedal for real-time parameter control.

The pedal includes digital models based on several legendary hardware units:

Tremolo: Models based on the optical tremolo of the 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb and the bias tremolo of the 1960 Vox AC15.
Phaser: Includes models inspired by the MXR Phase 90 and the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase.
Rotary: Simulates the Fender Vibratone and Leslie 145 speaker cabinets.
Chorus/Flanger: Features emulations of the Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble, MXR Flanger, A/DA Flanger, and the rare Tri-Stereo Chorus.
Unique Effects: Also includes a Uni-Vibe model, a Panner, and a Ring Modulator.

The MM4 gained significant visibility through its use by Prince, who adopted it during his 3121 era (2006) to replace his Zoom 9030 unit. He utilized it for phase, flange, vibrato, and panning effects throughout albums like Planet Earth and 20Ten. One of his personal units is currently on display at Paisley Park.
