The Höfner Club Contemporary Series is the modern reissue line of the classic 1950s Club 40/50/60 hollow-body electric guitars, and it's the successor to the original "Club" family that John Lennon and George Harrison famously played.
The original Club 40 debuted in 1955/56 as a small single-cutaway hollowbody (spruce top, maple back/sides/neck, rosewood fingerboard, single neck single-coil, trapeze tailpiece) inspired by the Les Paul, sold in the UK via Selmer. It became a skiffle/beat-era staple.
The Contemporary Series (roughly 2006–2011,) modernized the Club body for players: a set maple neck, 22-fret rosewood board, ~25.5" scale, and — in the Club Solid variant — a solid (airless) body with a tune-o-matic-style bridge and trapeze tailpiece, plus HH pickup configurations in some finishes. It's positioned as an affordable, modern take on the vintage Club look, generally well-regarded for playability and value.
