The Eastman ER-M El Rey is a premium electric mandolin designed to bridge the gap between acoustic tradition and modern amplification.  Unlike standard acoustic-electric mandolins that simply add a pickup to a hollow body, the ER-M features a solid center block construction to eliminate feedback at high volumes while retaining acoustic tonal characteristics.

The instrument was designed by master luthier Otto D’Ambrosio as part of the El Rey series, drawing aesthetic inspiration from classic archtop guitars like the Gibson ES models.  Its body features a hand-carved solid maple top with traditional f-holes and a solid one-piece mahogany back and sides.  This chambered body design with a solid mahogany center block allows players to crank up the volume without the feedback issues common in fully hollow instruments. 

Visually, the mandolin stands out with ivoroid binding, a cast aluminum tailpiece, and pearl "El Rey" thumbnail inlays on the ebony fingerboard.  It is available in finishes such as Classic Stain, topped with a gloss nitrocellulose finish.  The neck profile and 13 7/8" scale length are designed to feel familiar to players switching from standard F-style or A-style acoustic mandolins. 

At the heart of the ER-M’s electric capability is a custom Lollar Mandolin Humbucker pickup.  Designed specifically for this instrument by Jason Lollar, the pickup avoids the excessive brightness or darkness often found in electric mandolins, delivering a balanced, full-bodied tone suitable for genres ranging from bluegrass to jazz and rock. 

Controls are mounted on the lower bout and include volume and tone knobs, the latter utilizing a vintage-style Orange Drop capacitor. The combination of the solid center block and the high-quality pickup provides exceptional signal clarity and sustain, making it a viable option for stage performance where feedback control is critical.

The ER-M is built with professional-grade hardware, including Pingwell tuners, a bone nut (1 3/32" width), and an adjustable compensated ebony bridge.  It comes supplied with a hardshell case.
