Very good condition for 21 years old! This beauty was loved and played. Rough around the headstock. Plenty of dings, scratches, blemishes and buckle rash. Plays like a dream and has very littl fretwear. Crack on edge of pickguard. Includes case that is just as rough but structurally sound.

The 2005 Gibson Les Paul Classic Goldtop is a highly regarded instrument from Gibson’s Nashville plant, known for blending vintage 1960s aesthetics with modern playability. It features a SlimTaper neck profile, making it faster and thinner than traditional '50s-style Les Pauls, and is equipped with high-output 490R and 490T humbucking pickups for a punchy, classic rock tone.

The 2005 model is built with a mahogany body topped with a carved maple cap and finished in a glossy Nitrocellulose Lacquer Goldtop. Unlike some heavier standards, this model typically features 9-hole weight relief, bringing the weight down to approximately 9.5 to 9.7 lbs, though non-weight-relieved examples exist. The electronics usually consist of individual volume and tone controls with a toggle switch, and the hardware includes an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and nickel-plated components.

Neck and Playability The defining characteristic of the "Classic" line is the SlimTaper neck profile, which measures approximately .78" at the first fret and .88" at the 12th. This is significantly thinner than the bulky '50s profiles found on Standard models, appealing to players seeking speed and comfort. The fretboard is typically Indian Rosewood with acrylic trapezoid inlays. 

Pickups and Electronics Stock configurations for 2005 usually include the 490R (neck) and 490T (bridge) open-coil humbuckers. These are Alnico II magnets designed to offer higher output than vintage PAFs while retaining clarity. Some users report variations with 496/500T ceramic pickups in specific batches, so verifying the specific unit is recommended. 

Finish and Condition Issues A frequent trait of 2005 Goldtops is lacquer checking—fine cracks in the finish caused by temperature changes. While some players view this as desirable "relic" character that adds vintage appeal, others may see it as a cosmetic flaw. Potential buyers should also inspect for "buckle rash" on the back and wear on the gold finish.
