Up for sale is a hard to find boutique tube amplifier, made in Colorado by sound tech Bob Swanson. The amp is a 20 watt, semi open back combo with a 12" Eminence Alnico speaker. These amps sold for around $2000 new.
The amp has 2 EL84's in the power section and 3 12AX7's in the pre amp. This is can be a very aggressive sounding amp if wanted with incredible overdrive right out of the box, no overdrive pedals necessary.. It can get very loud but also able to get great overdriven sounds at bedroom levels. If you are into hard rock or metal, you will love this amp for it's aggressive sound that's hard to get from a pedal and only comes from the natural breakup caused when you push the tubes. It also has a switch that I believe cuts out one of the power tubes so you are basically running at 10 watts. However the amp does it under the hood, the effect of the switch is a lower volume for small venues or bedroom levels.
Despite it's aggressive nature, this beast can still clean up nicely. I have experimented with using a 12AT7 preamp tube in the first and second position and been able to get some great clean tones. Turn the preamp gain down to around 1/2-1 with the master volume up around 4 and I've got a great clean tone. I can then add in an overdrive pedal, or hit the included gain boost switch to dirty things up. Simply roll back the volume on your guitar and again, you're back to a nice clean tone. The amp is very responsive to your guitar volume settings as well as to your actual pick attack. Go lightly on the pick and you have a nice clean tone, but dig in a bit with your pick and depending on your settings, the amp begins to break up nicely. I use this amp in church and can get all the clean headroom I need. I think this is a very versatile amp able to keep up with the metal guys, but also equally apt in other musical genre such as blues and country.
