The Line 6 Acoustic 700 is a solid-body electric guitar designed to model the sounds of various acoustic instruments using advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technology. It was part of the Line 6 Variax series, which included several acoustic modeling guitars, with the 700 being one of the more expensive models featuring a spruce top. The guitar offers 16 detailed acoustic instrument sounds, including dreadnoughts, jumbos, nylon-string guitars, and even unique instruments like the Coral Sitar and Gibson Mastertone Banjo. It also provides instant access to 11 alternate tunings, such as Drop D and DADGAD, which can be changed with a single button press.
The Variax Acoustic 700 features a mahogany body with a carved spruce top, a one-piece maple neck, and a rosewood fingerboard with 24 frets. It includes a built-in compressor and simulated microphone placement, allowing for a realistic acoustic tone without the need for external miking, making it ideal for live performances and studio recordings. The guitar is powered by onboard electronics and can be connected via a standard 1/4" output or a VDI connection for integration with Line 6's digital audio systems.
Line 6 discontinued the acoustic Variax models, including the 700, in 2010, though the guitar remains available on the used market. A rare final model, the Variax Acoustic 900, was produced in limited numbers (only 50 units) and made in Japan, featuring a semi-hollow body design, a maple neck, and unique inlays. The most publicly recognized 900 was used by James Taylor during the 2008 NBA Finals opening ceremony. Despite its discontinuation, the Variax Acoustic 700 is praised for its versatility, with users highlighting its ability to emulate a wide range of acoustic tones and its feedback resistance in high-volume settings.
