The Catalinbread Formula No. 55 is a Foundation Overdrive pedal designed to replicate the preamp section of the classic Fender tweed 5E3 Deluxe amplifier with an all-discrete JFET-based signal path. It is renowned for delivering authentic tweed amp response, offering a wide range of tones from warm, clean jazz tones to aggressive, overdriven sounds. The pedal features a simple control layout including Volume, Tone, Presence, Master, and a Hi/Lo switch. The Volume control acts as a gain control, while the Tone control behaves similarly to the original 5E3 amplifier, with its influence becoming more subtle at higher volume settings. The Presence control adjusts frequencies around the 5kHz range, allowing users to fine-tune the top-end response. The Master control provides significant output, enabling users to achieve a large, fat clean tone or push their amplifier into overdrive.

The Hi/Lo switch offers two distinct gain modes: the Low/Green mode provides a cleaner, lower-gain response akin to a vintage tweed amp with 12AY7 preamp tubes, offering a more immediate attack and "bounce". The Hi/Red mode delivers higher gain, saturation, and a more aggressive, "hot-rodded" character, similar to swapping in higher-gain 12AX7 tubes. The pedal is designed to "melt into your amp," transforming it into a versatile tweed monster capable of handling various playing styles and genres. It is compatible with a 9V battery or a 9-18VDC power supply, with 18V providing greater headroom, percussive attack, and clarity, especially beneficial for band playing. The pedal is manufactured in the United States and has been in production since 2010.
