The Boss DR-880 Dr. Rhythm is a digital drum machine released between 2004 and 2016, known as a rhythm-programming powerhouse loaded with world-class drum, percussion, and bass sounds from Roland's famous SRX library, along with a collection of original waveforms. It features 20 velocity-sensitive pads, 32 voices of polyphony, and the capability to store up to 1,000 user-created patterns (500 preset and 500 user). The device includes innovative EZ Compose technology, allowing users to create original patterns quickly without note-by-note programming, and the Groove Modify feature to apply various groove and triplet feels, add ghost notes, and automatically insert fills.

The DR-880 also offers a Guitar/Bass Input jack, enabling guitar and bass players to plug in directly and play through built-in COSM Drive/Amp models and multi-effects, with 40 bass sounds available. It includes 3 independent insert effects (EQ and compression), TSC (Total Sound Control) with a 3-band EQ and high-quality ambience, and features individual outputs, a digital out, USB port, and MIDI I/O for connectivity. The unit is compact, with dimensions of approximately 13 x 16 x 5 inches and a weight of 6 pounds, powered by a 20-volt corded electric source, though it can also run on 4 AA batteries.

Despite its powerful features, the DR-880 has a steep learning curve, with some users noting a 20-second wait time for changes to write, which can be a drawback for some. However, many users praise its realistic sound quality, particularly the drum samples and bass modeling, and consider it a highly valuable tool for practice, rehearsal, and live performance. The machine is often recommended as a top choice among drum machines, especially for those seeking a high-quality, all-in-one unit with a rich sound library and extensive programming capabilities. It is no longer manufactured, making available units a sought-after item among musicians and producers.
