The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver is a popular guitar effects pedal released in 1995 that delivers a creamy yet crunchy sound associated with great blues guitar, providing instant access to warm overdrive and emotive distortion typically found in vintage tube amplifiers. It features three control knobs—Gain, Level, and Tone—allowing for a wide range of tonal adjustments, from subtle clean boost to near-fuzz territory. The pedal is known for its dynamic response to playing nuances, such as picking attack and volume changes, and it retains clarity and definition even at high gain levels. A key innovation of the BD-2 is its ability to maintain a crunch-like distortion sound even when the guitar's volume knob is turned down, a feature that was groundbreaking at the time.
The BD-2 is built with a robust, lightweight aluminum die-cast housing and includes a power jack, LED indicator, silent switching, and a leak-protective battery compartment, all hallmarks of the iconic Boss compact pedal design. It is available in a blue finish and is manufactured in Taiwan. The pedal is compatible with a 9V battery or an AC adapter (sold separately) and is covered by a five-year warranty.
The BD-2 has achieved cult classic status and has been used by a diverse range of artists across genres, including blues players like Joe Bonamassa and Eric Gales, rock and funk musicians such as Prince and Steve Vai, and modern artists like Dhani Harrison, Lukas Nelson, and Emily Wolfe.
