The hallmark of the Black Beauty snare is its black nickel over brass (BNOB) shell, renowned for its extraordinary depth, beauty, and richness. Each shell starts as a flat slab of brass that’s precision-formed into the seamless, beaded design players know and love. Because brass can be difficult to work with, Ludwig entrusts the shell formation to a select few USA drum makers in small batches. For this reason, only a handful of Black Beauties are created each year — another factor that adds to their desirability.
